This week in Oak Class we have been focusing on our mental health and what a super hero is to us. We made-up our own super hero with a cool name and special powers!! From firing dog toys out of their hands to breathing fire their heroes had it all. We ended our week by customising our School360 characters to look super special to us.
This week B9 have been celebrating Chinese New Year. We have researched the origins of the animals behind each year and what animal each child is.
We practised Chinese calligraphy, cooked some delicious Chinese food and enjoyed playing with our Chinese dragon in the tuff tray.
This week B6 have been carrying out activities to learn about mental health and well-being. Alongside their usual phonics activities – practising reading, spelling and handwriting – the children have taken part in a number of tasks based around the zones of regulation. The children have learned about how to recognise different emotions from faces in the green, red, blue and yellow zone and have made themselves a ‘My Zones Book’ to help them remember. The children have also thought about what they can do to keep healthy, and about what makes them happy – using laptops, paint and photographs to create a mixed media ‘happiness board’ about themselves. B6 have spent time in the garden this week, digging out an area of ground ready for some new seating to be installed and spotting different types of birds, and have been on the trampoline again in their rebound sessions.
The children have ended the week by taking part in a carousel to try out and rate how effective a number of different self regulation strategies are, ranging from listening to music and painting, to bouncing on the yoga ball and carrying heavy objects. Each individual has rated each of these and identified a number of different strategies for helping themselves to calm and feel happier. There’re a few pictures up on evidence for learning from the key learning activities of the week, so if you get a chance log on and have a look!
This week Willow class have been learning all about tectonic plates, the movement of our continents, from our time as Pangaea to the Jurassic period and to how our world looks now! We have been building our continents in the sand tray and watching how the seas moved around the land. We looked at the inner core, and the earthās layers and the Earthās crust. The children have painted some beautiful paintings of the skies as the world was ending for the dinosaurs, AWWW.
We had some great news this week, RW Mann Trust have kindly donated to the train project. Thank you so much, this will go towards developing out STEM carriage.
Also a big thank you to Mr Holmes who kindly made a donation to help. On this note we have created a āJust Givingā campaign to help raise Ā£10,000 to aid in the carriage development. If you would like to donate please go to https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/thedales-school.
Thank you to Ian Levy and the chronicle for appealing to the public to help the train projectĀ Ā https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/dales-school-blyth-pacer-train-22947145
We had a trip toĀ KirkmerringtonĀ School in County Durham. They showed us around their Class 142 Pacer train. We wish you all the best for your project. We are looking forward to Lesley visiting BlythdaleĀ to see our Train.
More exciting news to come next week.
This week in B10, we continued our investigation about the Prehistoric world. We learned all about the life of fossil hunter; Mary Anning, and how her contributions to the study of dinosaurs were almost forgotten about, due to the fact she was a woman! Thankfully today we know about her huge contributions in the study of dinosaurs. We also made our own dinosaur calzone pizzas. We also finished the week by writing our very own information report all about dinosaurs. Make sure to have a look at what we haveĀ read on our Assessment for Learning platform.
This week in B12 we had our first class trip out! We visited The Angel of the North in the morning and stopped off at Saltwell Park for dinner in the afternoon. We played in the park, had an ice cream with all the sauces and a flake, and saw millions of squirrels!
In Cedar class we have loved our topic āJurassic Worldā finding out about dinosaurs, where, when and how they lived. We have completed lots of craft activities including designing our own dinosaur. We wrote our own clues to guess the dinosaur and find the matching fossils. We were Palaeontologists for a day (like Mary Anning) and discovered what kind of dinosaurs were in the eggs. We have listened to lots of stories and facts. We drew life sized dinosaurs outside in the yard and compared how big they were to ourselves. We measured our own bodies and found out who had the longest and tallest.
We have researched the continents and oceans of the world and talked about how we can be environmentalists and look after our planet, we have tried to show how the world is changing in our science experiments e.g. how the ice caps are melting and why. We are going to end our topic with a dinosaur themed afternoon with dinosaur piƱata, food and games. They have had some great ideas for the names of their party food.
This week class B7 have explored their creativity. They had a āDinosarumpusā where they chose instruments to represent the sound of the dinosaurs and came together to make a lovely sound!
They wrote dinosaur poems using describing words and made a dinosaur scene where they created a movie using āimotionā on the ipad.
They also saw some real reptiles when Animal Antics visited with the animals.
This week in 10B, we continued on with our exciting Jurassic World topic. We investigated the eating habitsĀ of dinosaurs further, learning about herbivores and carnivores. We even made our very own dinosaur poo! Inspect closely to see if you can tell the dinosaur’s diet! We also each chose our own dinosaur to research. We are currently buildingĀ a dinosaur fact file for our chosen dinosaur.
